The Los Angeles Times seems to be interested in rounding up today's current geek icons before bombarding them with questions about their previous films and the ones they may have planned for the future. Last week they sat down with Christopher Nolan and talked all things Batman and Superman, and now they've posted up a chat with Bryan Singer and producer Lauren Shuler Donner on all things X-Men.
Perhaps the most interesting thing to come from the conversation is that Singer admits to meshing more with the X-Men universe than any other – so much so that there's a chance he'd even return (after directing X-Men: First Class, a prequel to the original X-Men film) to direct X-Men 4 and possibly even Wolverine 2. Unfortunately for Singer, though, there may not be enough of him to go around. He notes, "I wish I could be four people. I could make everybody happy."
Part of the problem is that Singer is still on the hook to direct a big-screen Jack the Giant Killer movie for Warner Bros., even though Fox – who are currently rolling in Avatar money – want to get going on those X-Men films sooner rather than later. Singer will first direct X-Men: First Class, which may or may not feature cameos from some of our favorite X-Men characters, and as far as X-Men 4 goes, Singer turned to Donner at one point during the interview, saying, "Hold that one off for just a little, I'm fixated on the other one right now." She replied, "I will, I will…I'm holding it open with high hopes. It's totally different [from First Class] and it will be so interesting for you."
Nevertheless, it's pretty obvious that Fox would be happy with Singer directing every X-Men movie they put out. If I were to take a guess, I'd say he won't have time to direct Wolverine 2, even though he talks about meeting with Hugh Jackman in the interview. However, X-Men: First Class and X-Men 4 are definitely in the picture, and as of now they both have Singer's name written all over them.
Do you think Bryan Singer should direct all the X-Men films, or would you rather see them change it up and bring in some new blood?
