Brad Pitt Could Go Deep with David Fincher for '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'

David Fincher has been circling a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea reboot for some time now, but the project hasn’t been able to hold water for various reasons.

In between efforts to get the movie moving forward, Fincher has filled time with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the upcoming Netflix drama, House of Cards. But a card might have landed on the table that will help Fincher get back into the 20,000 Leagues boat … and it’s a familiar card in the director’s deck.

Variety reports that Fincher wants his frequent collaborator Brad Pitt to step into the boots of Captain Nemo, the hero of Jules Verne’s classic novel. The actor’s rep didn’t confirm the possibility of Pitt playing Nemo on screen … nor did they shoot down the idea (which sometimes is confirmation in and of itself).

Pitt and Fincher have history. Their films include Se7en, Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and it’s likely that they’ll work together again at least once over the course of their careers. If Pitt’s up for 20,000 Leagues, that will help Walt Disney gamble on what could be an expensive, water-logged effects picture.

At the same time, Daniel Craig has been mentioning in interviews that he’s prepared to go back into the realm of Dragon Tattoo with Fincher is Sony greenlights The Girl who Played with Fire, the second chapter of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy.

Either is possible. So tell us, Fincher fans, which project would you rather see him commit to? A second Larsson adaptation? Or a 20,000 Leagues film with Pitt in the lead role?
