Box Office: Can Arnold Push 'The Last Stand' Past 'Mama' and 'Broken City'?

Sure we caught glimpses of him in the two Expendables movies, but this weekend marks the official return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the big screen. The action star is back in The Last Stand, but will his star power be enough to power the action comedy over Jessica Chastain in Mama or the Russell Crowe-Mark Wahlberg combo in Broken City? Let's take a closer look…

The Last Stand

What's the Scoop: Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to the big screen as the sheriff of a quiet town in Arizona, when an escaped convict comes barreling through looking to get into Mexico. Not on Arnold's watch!

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Arnold's back and this film gets the added kick of being the Hollywood debut of director Kim Ji-woon (The Good, The Bad, The Weird). Plenty of comedy and action should draw in a strong opening weekend audience.

What's the Scoop: Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau play a young couple who are faced with the challenge of raising his young nieces who were left alone in the forest for five years. But how did they survive on their own?

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Chastain is certainly the buzz of awards season, coming off her performance in Zero Dark Thirty. Will audiences be curious to check her out in this Guillermo del Toro-produced horror flick?

Broken City

What's the Scoop: Mark Wahlberg stars as an ex-cop seeking redemption after being double-crossed by the most powerful figure of a corrupt city – the mayor, played by Russell Crowe.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: It's got two A-list stars in Wahlberg and Crowe and comes from one half of the Hughes Bros. directing tandem.

My Prediction: It looks like Jessica Chastain will be her own competition this weekend, as Mama and Zero Dark Thirty battle for the top spot. That been said, I'll go with Mama as it has the added Del Toro fan base and horror movies usually perform well in January.

My Pick of the Week: There's nothing that particularly stands out, though if you're trying to decide which of the new releases to see, Mama will probably be your best bet. Otherwise, it might be a good weekend to catch one of the Oscar nominated movies, such as Les Miserables, which expands in IMAX.

Now it's your turn. Tell us which movie(s) you're seeing this weekend as well as the film you think will come out on top of the box office!
