'Batman vs. Superman' Considers Joaquin Phoenix for... Lex Luthor?

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… a possible villain for the Batman/Superman team-up movie, and the addition of a new screenwriter?

For reasons known only to them, Warner Bros. executives began doling out pieces of information pertaining to Zack Snyder’s planned pairing of D.C. Comics’ two titans. We already know that Ben Affleck is playing the Dark Knight in Snyder’s film, with Henry Cavill reprising his role as Superman. Today, Variety reports that Warner is looking at Joaquin Phoenix, star of the studio’s current film Her, to play a villainous role… possibly Lex Luthor.

Remember Phoenix as the wicked emperor in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator

Can you see him in the role? Phoenix has made several interesting choices since coming out of “retirement.” You absolutely need to see him in Spike Jonze’s abnormal romance Her. It opens in wider release in January.

As for Lex Luthor, Phoenix doesn’t look like the traditional “Lex,” but he’s such a capable actor, we easily can imagine him tackling the role and destroying it.

On the other side of town, The Hollywood Reporter noted that Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio has been hired to draft a treatment for the sequel.

But wait? We already know that Wonder Woman has been cast. And the production recently filmed scenes at a California football stadium. Shouldn’t there be a script in place?

Either way, the gears are turning quickly on Batman vs. Superman, a movie with a release date but no official title. What do you think of Phoenix for Luthor? And is the hiring of the Argo scripter a good sign? Weigh in!
