'Avatar 2' Still Brewing

With the first round of Avatar DVDs hitting the shelves this Tuesday, producer Jon Landau met with some members of the press to talk about the making of the film and the upcoming DVD, but he also entertained questions about the sequel. So far this much is known: The folks at 20th Century Fox are itching to piece together an Avatar sequel, and James Cameron (as well as his team) are more than willing to jump right back on. Problem is, of course, that contracts need to be drawn, and scripts need to be written (and approved) and a lot has to happen before Avatar 2 goes from idea to reality.

That's essentially what Landau seems to be getting at during this latest round of interviews. He notes (via Coming Soon)," Jim [Cameron] has done two sequels in his career, and both times, he has at least equaled if not surpassed the original movie. We're only going to do it when we have a piece of material, a script, that we believe will be at least as entertaining and unique as the first movie was."
Both Landau and Cameron will spend the next few months putting together the special features on a special four-disc Avatar set that's due on shelves in November. This first DVD doesn't include anything except the movie, so you may want to rent and hold your money for the bigger set arriving later this year. After that's all done, hopefully it'll be off to make another one.
And for those who still haven't had enough of the first one, Avatar will be hitting select theaters this weekend for one last run up on the big screen in 3D. Check out this list over at AMC to see where it's playing in your neck of the woods.
