At the Academy Announcements: 'Blind Side' Gets the Cheers

Anne Hathaway and Tom Sherak announce the Academy Award nominees.Right on schedule, at 5:38 a.m., Academy President Tom Sherak came on stage and introduced Anne Hathaway. She waltzed out, classily decked in a cream pantsuit and tan blouse, and joined him to announce the full list of Academy Award nominations.

For those not familiar with the hoopla surrounding the announcements, here's a snapshot of what went down at the Academy in the wee hours of the morning. There were a few surprises and snubs, but for the most part, the films that were highly anticipated (i.e. -  Avatar) were duly nom’d.
Penelope Cruz's (Nine) nomination for Supporting Actress was the first announcement, and received a few claps. Supporting Actor announcements for Matt Damon (Invictus), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) and Best Actress nominees Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia) earned even more woos. In the animated category, Coraline and Princess and the Frog seemed to be favorites, and the loudest cheers erupted for the Best Pictures nominees, with The Blind Side getting the most love.
In case you wondered, it’s an early start before the main event with breakfast at 3:30 a.m.; the media doesn't do much besides wait and get excited about the complimentary coffee carts. Come 4:30 a.m., the place is bustling with hordes of crews doing initial stand-up shots in multiple languages. Everyone files into the theater at the allotted 5 a.m., and watches (and watches) a countdown screen flanked by 7-foot-tall Oscar statues.
As has been noted, the Academy is returning  to 10 Best Picture nominees, which it hasn't done since 1943. That doesn’t mean more quality flicks were produced last year, but it should serve as a boost to Oscar ratings, especially since uber popular Avatar is the lead contender (its nine noms are the most, alongside The Hurt Locker). In a little more than a month (Sunday, March 7th), we'll all get to find out. For more on the Oscars, check out our Awards Watch.
