Are They Here Yet? We Can’t Wait to Meet Chug and Dusty from 'Planes'

When I was a kid, my dad was on a plane almost every week, so I spent a lot of time at the airport. Sometimes he’d bring us back wings, but occasionally we’d get lucky and the pilot would invite us on board and give us a tour of the cockpit.

In a post 9/11 world, the closest my kids have been to an airplane is the drop-off/pick-up lanes at the Houston airport. My son’s eyes grow as big as saucers as he points to the planes on the runway and the ones in the air and he says “Look, Mommy” over and over again.

After we see Disney Pixar’s Planes in August, I have a feeling that the “Look, Mommy” will change to “Look, it's Dusty” or “Look, it’s Ripslinger” or “There’s Chug.” Based on my son’s obsession with Cars, I’m guessing he’s probably going to fall in love with Chug, the fuel truck (voiced by Brad Garrett). I say that because he loves trucks, and Mater is his favorite Cars character. Chug and Mater seem to share some similar traits.

With a fear of heights and a history of trying to do things I wasn’t necessarily made to do, I think Dusty (voiced by Dane Cook) might be my favorite. That’s kind of ironic because I refuse to fly on prop planes out of fear! And I was a bit shocked that Dane Cook has a role in a kid’s movie -- this should be interesting!

I’ll also admit that I was excited to learn that Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards will star as Echo and Bravo with a salute to their roles as Goose and Ice Man in Top Gun.

I’m kind of at a loss as to which character my daughter will be most excited to watch. There is Ishani (voiced by Priyanka Chopra), the Pan-Asian champion that’s mysterious and highly competitive; Dottie, the forklift and co-owner of Chug and Dottie’s Fill 'n' Fly service station; and Rochelle (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), the pink and white racer that is focused more on success than she is on romantic relationships. Considering her love for all things pink, I’m leaning towards Rochelle!

August 9 can’t get here fast enough for my children, as they ask at least once a day when they see a preview: “When can we go see Planes?"

Maybe I should create a calendar with fun facts about airplanes and aviation history, so we can count down the days together?
