Anthony Mackie to Play Falcon in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier,' Watch 'Item 47' Marvel Short

Just when you thought Marvel had shown all its cards at Comic-Con this past weekend comes word that Anthony Mackie is set to play Falcon in the newly retitled Captain America sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

So who is Falcon? Well, his real name is Sam Wilson and his father, a minister, was killed trying to stop a fight in the tough Harlem neighborhood they lived in. Sam's mother was killed two years later by a mugger and the grief and anger consumed him so much, his life turned toward crime. He took on the name 'Snap' Wilson and worked as a racketeer for the mob.

After an assignment in Rio de Janeiro, Sam's plane crashed in a remote Caribbean island where the Red Skull and his henchman were hiding out. Red Skull decided to use Wilson as a means of luring Captain America to him, reasoning that Sam's idealism would appeal to Cap that he'd make him his crime-fighting partner.

Using a Cosmic Cube (a powerful cube that allows whoever possessing it to literally reshape reality), Skull reverted Snap into Sam and gave him the ability to communicate with birds, especially a bird Wilson had bought named Redwing. Sam helped Captain America defeat the Skull and eventually became his partner as The Falcon.

It's nice to see Mackie finally get the franchise exposure he deserves. He's a great actor and a solid addition and his casting raises the question that perhaps he cameos in Iron Man 3?

OK, we're getting ahead of ourselves a bit. What do you think of Mackie joining the Marvel family as Falcon?

While you ponder your response, check out the new Item 47 short which will be featured on The Avengers DVD/BluRay. The short fills the honorable shoes of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his exploits between Phase One Marvel movies.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives in theaters April 4, 2014.
