Writer-director Jeff Wadlow tweeted confirmation that Jim Carrey has joined the cast of Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall, a rumor that has been circulating for some time. The flexible funnyman has signed on to play Colonel Stars in the anticipated sequel – a character who will band the makeshift superheroes together into a Justice League of sorts. An average Avengers, so to speak.
Carrey will join the already cast Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Chloe Grace Moretz (Hit Girl) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist), who helped carry the initial superhero origin story to unexpected successes.
But Carrey’s not the only newcomer to the series. Donald Faison of the hit sitcom Scrubs was added to the ensemble earlier.
Kick-Ass was expected to be a cult hit, but mainstream audiences responded to the hard-hitting, gritty and pitch-black humor of a comic-worshipping nerd who takes a page out of Peter Parker’s playbook and attempts to fight crime. His utter lack of superpowers hardly deters him, though Kick-Ass does come to meet similar superheroes who don’t always have his best interests at heart.
The last few casting slots for Kick-Ass 2 should be filled soon, as Never Back Down director Wadlow plans to begin production on his Kick-Ass 2 script later this month. Kick-Ass 2 will be in theaters on June 28, 2013. What do you think about Carrey’s casting? A solid fit? Or a possible distraction? Let us know below.
