5 Ways NOT to Ruin Your Movie Date Night

We all know date night requires an enormous investment of time, energy and money. And with Valentine's Day upon us, times that by a hundred.

Not only do you have to coordinate your schedules, put on something besides yoga pants and shell out for dinner, drinks and a babysitter; but then there’s all that pressure to make sure you and your significant person HAVE A GOOD TIME. Yes, an all-caps good time.

So don’t ruin it.

Pick the Right Movie
Sounds obvious enough, but choosing the right film is important. Seriously. Don’t underestimate the power of unanimous choice. Some couples are lucky to have similar tastes in movies, like a deep appreciation for foreign thrillers or anything by Quentin Tarantino. But sometiems you have to work at compromise. Whatever you ultimately decide on may not be either person’s first pick, but as long as everyone is happy with the outcome, then you’re already doing it right.

Location. Location. Location
Don’t go to the movie theater closest to your house or that one next to Target. Why? Because we all know you’ll end up doing those errands you didn’t cross off your to-do list. Try a different neighborhood multiplex with unfamiliar bars and restaurants nearby, or go to the movies another town over. You might discover your new favorite theater.

Get Comfy
Get to the theater early enough to get good seats, obvs. No one wants to get stuck in the first row or having to split up (what kind of date night is that?) and of course the more popular or new the movie, the faster it'll likely sell out the best options. Get in early, get settled, and get cozied up. Lift up the armrests (if you have the option) and share a snack. There's something weirdly romantic about lovers’ hands meeting in a tub of buttered popcorn. Hey, it is date night after all.

Time It Right
If you walk into The Wolf of Wall Street thinking you’ll be in and out in an hour and a half, you’re going to have one cranky babysitter. Viewing trailers and getting to the movie theater early enough tacks on more time and when all's said and done, you're nearing the three-to-four-hour mark, not to mention time for dinner and drinks. Consider picking up tickets ahead of time, or even going to a dine-in theater to maximize date time.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry
Maybe you like to get dinner out of the way and then relax with a movie. Or maybe seeing a film, then going out to dinner and getting in a hot debate over you’ve just seen is more your speed. Or maybe you even like a little of both – grabbing dinner before the movie, then heading out for a nightcap or coffee afterwards. In the end it doesn’t matter, as long as you do it together.

How do you make sure your movie date night runs smoothly?
