'24' Film Delayed, Plus Robert Rodriguez Talks 'Heavy Metal,' 'Sin City 2' & New 'Machete' Movies

While 24 fans may be happy to see Kiefer Sutherland's supernatural drama Touch make its premiere next week on Fox, they're probably going to be bummed to read what Deadline had to report today. The new series didn't seem like it would delay the film adaptation of Sutherland's award-winning 24 television series. Now, the actor may lose his race against the clock as it's being reported that 20th Century Fox doesn't believe they'll have enough time to finish the film before Sutherland has to shoot season two of Touch.

The studio has decided not to give the green light on the project for this year. Sutherland is reportedly upset that he won't be able to resume his role as a government operative on the big screen, but Deadline posts that Fox may switch gears once the actor has his next break. If Touch doesn't get the go for a second season — which seems highly unlikely given the positive response to its pilot — then there's always a chance it could move ahead sooner rather than later.

Several projects that are moving along nicely belong to Robert Rodriguez. The filmmaker chatted with fans at Austin's SXSW festival, providing an update on several much-anticipated projects — including his Heavy Metal adaptation, the long-awaited follow-up to Sin City, and two sequels Machete Kills/Machete Kills Again. The directors animated version of cult fantasy film Heavy Metal was the talk at Comic-Con last summer, where Rodriguez invited long-time fans to submit their ideas via a YouTube open call. The project would be part of his newly formed Quick Draw Studios.

Now, Collider is reporting that the filmmaker has a finished script and is already moving onto the storyboard phase. With regards to the Danny Trejo exploitation riff Machete Kills/Machete Kills Again, Rodriguez advised he's on track to start filming next month. "The plot apparently has Machete tasked with taking down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space."

Finally, Sin City 2 has been hanging in the air for a while, but the ball will finally start rolling this summer according to the director. There's been a revolving set of cast rumors, and The Departed screenwriter William Monahan has passed on the project, but hopefully things stay on track as promised. Rodriguez did reassure fans that his entire sequel casts "will be of the same caliber and eclecticism as the first films." Are you buying what he's selling?
