MONGOL : The Softer Side of Ghengis Kahn

    by lugubriousthespian

Intense and gripping epic story with a bit of folklore nonsense thrown in about the early life and time of warlord Ghengis Kahn. Played extremely well by the always fascinating Japanese actor Tadanolov Asano, the movie plows forward with only a modicum of bloodshed and more accent is given to the back story of this largely enigmatic historical figure. Acclaimed director Serge Borov ably directs the first part of what is intended to be a trilogy.

    Slow but worthwhile

    by RandytheMovieFan

Great cinematography, very good acting, bloody but stylish battle scenes, and a history lesson on a man most people have heard of but know next to nothing about. Yes, I wish the movie had moved faster and allowed time to cover the rest of Genghis Khan's life, his domination beyond Mongolia, but the point was to show the story behind the man, an intimate portrait, not a rendition of countless battles. Of course if they do a sequel, I'll be there.

    Great storytelling and cinematography....

I'd recommend this movie to anyone. Great romantic, historical epic type movie. The cinematogrphy, as everyone has mentioned, is beautifully moving. I agree the CGI blood moments were a bit unnecessary, and they stood out as unrealistic, which didn't follow the rest of the real, raw, more believable stuff. CGI is weird like that in movies. It's a balance of not too jarring and not too phony. I thought the love story was beautiful and well balanced, again thanks to the expert cinematography which told alot of the story without words. I really enjoyed watching this film. It had genuine humor and clarity in the intent of the shots. Also the costuming and art direction was superb. The acting is wonderful too. The kids were great actors in it as well as the adult actors. It created the nomadic, tribal, ancient world with great detail and skill. Again I think thanks to the cinematography.
    Go see it!

    Ride out and see it!

Mongol is as breathtaking in its cinematography as it is in its story. True love, romance, epic battles, triumph, defeat. The tale of the man we know as Genghis Khan shows us the human side of a man who has been vilified in Western society (mostly because in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, he created the army and dynasty that nearly conquered the world.) His empire was larger than Alexander's. His laws were simple and fair.
Here we see a small slice of his life, leading up to the beginning of his reign as "The Great Khan."
We also see, beautifully filmed, the lands of Mongolia, little changed by time. A wonderful experience, a wonderful story, masterfully told. Go see it at the theatre - it needs the big screen.

    Mongol

My husband loved it for the historical info and the action. I left several times: too bloody, one fight after another, no character development, and I don't understand why people want to conquer other people. Uck.
