A tender tale of growing up for thirty-somethings
Nicely directed indie movie which makes some beautifully awkward comedy out of a young man's return home to visit his parents in their NY-downtown apartment, where he uncovers remnants of his former life and a stock-pile of other artifacts and nick-nacks, each of which tells a story from the past. Accompanying him in this un-nervingly confined space, and providing some of the best comedy moments in the movie, the director/writer casts his own parents (Ken and Flo Jacobs) as themselves, in a tale which is clearly semi-autobiographical.
Some very touching scenes also, alongside the excruciatingly painful real-life comedy that emerges from the main character's inability to just live out his life without over-thinking it. A somewhat slow-paced narrative only gives the audience that extra helping of inertia which, ultimately does go on just a little too long.
Great modern cinema nevertheless, with a decent piano based score. Go see it.
