    MATINEE

If you haven't already seen this loving homage to the schlock fests of the 50s & 60s (notably the offspring of movie meister Wiliam Castle) or even if you have - watch it again. It is simply one of the funniest, well-constructed comedies of the 90s. Starring John Goodman as a down-on-his luck producer of grade B horror and sci-fi films who is desperately trying to premier his latest creation "Mant" in Key West, MATINEE has the benefit of being set on the eve of the Cuban missle crisis which wratchets up the tenor for the entire film. Many orbniting characters flesh out the subplots involving the towns people who are on the verge of panic, and the movie within a movie is a delectable, loving spoof of all the giant insect horrors of the time period. Cathy Moriarity is especially funny as the acerbic leading lady/girlfriend of Goodman's. Terrific period look and music - directed by the stalwart student of Spielberg Joe Dante. One of a kind chestnut!
