Great cast, enjoyable, but a little slow
Many sounds in the audience of yawning while I was watching this film, but it really is an excellent period piece, which takes place during the 1950s. The cast is quite incredible - Pierce Brosnan, Patricia Clarkson, Chris Cooper, etc. - excellent performances by them all, especially Chris Cooper, who deserves an Oscar nod for this one. This is really a surprising, probably accurate look at married couples during this time. This is a movie for movie-lovers, which has depth and substance, and requires some concentration. One of the best things out there right now.

Rich in characters, imagery; slow-moving & deficient in dialogue
The visuals of this period movie were spot-on as were the characters who were played superbly by a tremendous & well-cast ensemble.
However, the dialogue seems to have been written by someone too young to remember the patois of the period. The slow-moving pace appeared to be designed to emphasize an age where life moved more languidly but, unfortunately, simply makes the movie drag unnecessarily.
In short, the movie was beautiful and true as far as historic accuracy but the script was predictable and lacked sufficient pace to keep most of today's moviegoers intersted.

A Marriage is never what it seems!
This movie is not for everybody but if you like a slowly unfolding, noirish film that appears simple but then heats up this is for you. People are like icebergs, 7/8th of their feelings and wishes are hidden below the water! Director Ira Sachs, who doesindependant type films not for the masses has a good time with this one, super music and costumes, set in the 40's, filmed in Canada, very good acting especially from Pierce Brosnin and Chris Cooper, in fact all the cast. The critics don't seem to like it but the audience (mid thirties upwards) were enjoying it, some laughs along the way and worth seeing at least on DVD. Not for the younger crowd.

Married Life
After seeing this movie, I realize how versatile Chris Cooper can be. He's got this menacing sneer that provokes instant fear, and he doesn't even have to say a word. But "Married Life" shows all sides of his character--the desperate, loving and depressed sides. Pierce Brosnan brings comic relief and the whole cast was convincing. The best thing about this movie is that it's unpredictable. Even in the middle, when you're forming inklings of what might happen, HOW it happens is so twisted, you never see it coming. It has its lulls in some parts, but it grew on me. By the end, I had thoroughly enjoyed it.
