This Greek drama was originally released as Despinia Etom 39. The star of the proceedings is popular regional comedian Basil Logothetidis, here cast as the respondent to an "object matrimony" ad in the personals column. Before the film is two-thirds over, Logothetidis has thrown over his intended spouse -- the middle-aged spinster of the title -- in favor of his own brother's fiancee. Though essentially a comedy, the film ends on a downbeat note, with two sympathetic characters being forced to come to terms with their loneliness. Though financed by a Greek film company, Mademoiselle, Age 39 was shot in Cairo, Egypt. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
