Madagascar 2 great for parents, OK for kids

We took our two young children (ages 4 and 8) to see Madagascar 2 with the assumption that they would like it more than we would, as was the case with the first in this series. Turned out to be the other way around. Lots of great jokes and themes to keep us adults interested (as has often been the case with DreamWorks productions), but possibly so much so that it was a touch above our children's heads. Nothing in the movie that was inappropriate for kids or of any concern, but just took some higher level thinking to understand some of what was going on -- more so perhaps than a film like Lion King. Our 8 year old certainly understood it better and thus liked it a bit more than our 4 year old, and he's usually less interested in movies than she is, so age is definitely a helper. Don't want to spoil the plot (not that it's particularly deep), but hope this generalization can help parents make decisions about whether or not to take their younger children.

    Great Family Fun!!!!

    by deevman

We saw this at an IMAX theater. Wow, what a treat. The movie continues the adventures of the New York Zoo escapees including the ingenious and diabolical Penguins. It is a must see. The visuals and music are great!!

Just don't see it in an IMAX 'DOME'

The movie itself is great. I thought the first "Madagascar" film was one of Dreamworks stronger computer-animated films. This one is a worthy successor.

I, however, saw this movie in an IMAX Dome. The Dome format with this movie leaves something to be desired. My whole family agreed that it's much too big for this type of character driven movie. It's hard to comprehend what's happening during the faster sequences because you can't see the whole screen at once. When two characters are having a conversation with both of them on the screen at once; due to the curved dome they are on opposite sides of the room. This makes it harder work for the audience having to look from one to the other and you miss how the other character you are not watching reacts.

I'm not knocking the Dome format itself hear, but rather the choice to show this movie in that format. I've seen nature documentaries in the Dome before, and they achieved a much grander and vast scale when played in the Dome form.

See it in IMAX if you can

    by asawyer

The movie itself was very entertaining for kids and adults alike. There were some "inside" jokes to help keep parents entertained.

Additionally, my son and I were very impressed with the IMAX experience. This was a first time (in a commercial theater versus a Science Center) for both of us. We'll both make a point to look for IMAX formatted movies in the future.

    Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

    by TvTech6

The movie was very good. I did enjoy the experience on the Crossgates MINI-IMAX, and it would probably be even better on a TRUE IMAX screen.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa: The IMAX Experience

    by bmt2394

My family loved the original Madagascar. This one was terrible in comparison. It was a really lame plot - almost a spoof on The Lion King. It was a lot of the same old one-liners from the first with the obnoxious, sarcastic penguins and silly bickering amongst the other characters. The story never took off and my family was very disappointed. Also, seeing it in IMAX was not an experince worth remembering.

    Good Movie

    by ceceily

This was a good movie. We enjoyed it very much. It did however have some of the same storylines as Lion King. It was great to see at an IMAX theater.

    Very cute!

    by Sayray

My husband and I went and loved it. Not as good as the first but definiately a barrel of laughs. We fell in love with the gang again and met some really fun, new characters in this sequel. We were dancing in the aisles on the way out. "We like to move it, move it!".

very funny, although it had a few scenes that were beyond comprehension of kids, it was an enjoyble movie for both adults and kids.

    GREAT FUN!

    by jef13bc

WHILE IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO POP THE FIRST 'MADAGASCAR' INTO THE BLU-RAY BEFORE GOING, THE STORYTELLERS HAVE DONE A PRETTY GOOD JOB OF EXPLAINING THE BASICS FROM THE FIRST FLICK TO GET YOU PROPELLED INTO THIS EVEN BETTER SEQUEL (DON'T SAY THAT OFTEN!)!!

ESPECIALLY AS AN ADULT, YOU'LL FIND THERE ARE UNENDING JOKES WITHIN JOKES, DOUBLE ENTENDRES, AS WELL AS THE LOADS OF FUN VISUALS AND JOKES FOR THE KIDS. ADDITIONALLY, I WOULD SAY THAT, WHILE THERE IS A MORALITY TO THE STORY - NAMELY, THE NOTION THAT FRIENDSHIP MAKES THE WHOLE STRONGER AND BETTER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS - THERE'S NO PREACHINESS TO 'MAD-2'; YOU'LL PROBABLY COME AWAY WITH A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND A HANKERING TO CALL YOUR FRIENDS!

GO SEE THIS ONE ON A BIG SCREEN.
