Lootera, is a 2013 Bollywood period (1953) romantic drama film directed by partly based on author O. Henry's 1907 short story The Last Leaf. This is not your typical Bollywood musical with no dancing or musical numbers by the stars in the film. This is more like an art film, with beautiful cinematography and wonderful performances by film stars Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles and a hauntingly beautiful score with songs. In all respects this starts as a typical daughter (Pakhi) of a rich zamindar accidentally runs into a handsome motorcyclist (Varun), who is supposedly an archeologist.....but we learn he is part of a ring of thieves fleecing the rich by buying their assets with counterfeit money. On their wedding day he flees with the family wealth leading to the father's death and a heart broken Pakhi, who is dying of consumption. Pakhi harbors him after he is shot by the police and it is then that we realize and are perplexed by the complexity of their attachment.

This movie is for those who appreciate the finer nuances of movie making. The scenes are like picture postcards, you can freeze frame them and hang around your walls. Great work from the technical team. Sonakshi Sinha is learning the craft of acting and looks pretty in those bengali sarees. Ranvir is good and does justice to his role. There is a thriller element to this movie but don't go in with great expectations because that's not the main focus of the story. It is a slow paced movie and folks expecting a gangster style hoi poi should beware. This lootera will not loot with semi-automatic weapons, rather with a .303
