Usually I fall asleep in talky, political, historical movies but I was wide awake throughout this one, watching Daniel Day Lewis' amazing performance and learning all about the events around the abolition of slavery. The story had a good balance of home life interest, politics, and a hunt, keeping all of my and my husband's attention. I'm glad that they didn't bite off more than they could chew in this movie, keeping their focus on one short period during Lincoln's presidency. It had a sprinkling of humor and just a touch of sadness, to where one doesn't feel too emotionally overwhelmed one way or the other. The audience was impressed enough with the story, the acting, and probably with respect toward Lincoln, who you feel that you've come to know, to applaud at the end. It was a wonderful, patriotic movie and highly recommended.

Superbly ACTED and DIRECTED. Brilliant cinematography. One or two mentions here by fan reviewers regarding script problems. Not TRUE. The story is beautifully told and the language is rich, dense, intelligent. Sally Field IS Mary Todd and Daniel Day Lewis IS Lincoln. I would like to add that anyone who is interested in our current political impasses will gain great insight into their genesis. I plan to see this movie again.

...others may be bored with the engrossing politics and Capitol Hill manuevering, but what great perfomances! DDL is gonna get his 3rd and Sally Field's one fiery scene and another heart melting scene will get her a nomination.
You will come away with a soul stirring feeling of having spent 4 months with Lincoln himself! His stories are like Granpa would tell you, his wisdom always made his way to the end of a discussion, and his determination to see see things through.
I get bored with politics especially after the recent year of crap. That is the only reason I do't gove it top marks. People may be bored with the D vs R battle.

It's epic, complex, sad, funny, and insightful.
Beyond that, won't attempt to describe the artistry that is this film...just go see it. In the theater. A fitting tribute to Veteran's Day, and to those who gave the last full measure.

Great story, well told with humor and humanity. Has politics really changed in 150 years? You be the judge. This is the level of detail I never got in school. I definitely would have been a better student if it had been presented like this. I was totally engrossed and entertained for the whole show. Another Spielberg triumph with great acting all around and realistic staging.
