Deeper than the surface
This movie, like the book, can be appreciated at various levels. The photography is breathtaking, to be sure. The story seems magical - and indeed it is. But the real message is hidden beneath many complex layers. It is actually very profound and disturbing. That's why the fantastical imagery - and the story at the surface - is only the surface. When you peer beneath the surface of the water, as Pi sometimes does, there are truths that are deeper, mysterious and so gloomy that human nature rejects them and prefers the fantasy to fact. Because the surface is so beautiful and hard to penetrate, many folks will only see the surface and the movie is bound to be underappreciated.
