    A literary film with lots of "ah-ha" moments

    This is a literary film which brings to life in 3D a young boy's struggle to survive. Several reviewers have described the first third of the film as "slow," but that portion is critical to the story development and sets the stage for what happens in the last two thirds. After seeing it last night, I woke up thinking about how the many details in the story came together as metaphors for life, spirituality, self awareness, survival, and irrational truth as a preference for factual truth. Pi deals with his instinct for survival using the lessons he learned from his father, his mother, and his own curiosity. His name itself is a metaphor for an irrational number with no end.

    Go see this film with an open mind, and my bet is that you will remember it fondly for years to come. Much of what occurs in the story wan't make sense until the next day.

    life of pie

    I loved this film. I thought the acting, directing, cinematography and the musical score were amazing.
    I think this movie is more adult friendly. I believe a mature child could view this film, but it does contain some scenes that could be difficult for a child to witness.
    I laughed and cried (hard) during this movie. I am very connected to animals. Therefore some of the scenes were difficult for me to watch.
    I found the various concepts of a higher power very interesting.
    This film is beautifully filmed and made me think about life and how much larger it is than just me.

    Spiritual Life

    to understand this story ... one need to have a bit of understanding of the many "gods" that India has ... a story of a boy growing up living in a country with different beliefs....how many religions/beliefs do Americans have? because of the different beliefs that he was learning growing up and trust in his faith he was able to live through his 227 days stranded at seas. humans are spiritual beings, it doesn't matter whatever names people name their faiths, when your mind is free from money, it tends to revert toward: Living the Life with what you already have, your own self, your spirits. That's it! No tangible things that get your mind stray away from your true self.

    What's your god? iphone, cars, mansions, fame, drugs, sex?

    Very good adaption

    I loved this movie, it had all the themes in the book. The acting was superb and visually it was just strking. Exactly what I would expect from Ang Lee.

    Life of Pi

    The acting and special effects were wonderful. Read the book years ago, so it wasn't as exciting to me as to those who didn't read the book. However, it's a terrific movie. Very real!

    pretty good

    I wouldn't take young children to see this as there is implication and talk of animal and human death which can be quite intense for some children. However it was fairly accurate in comparison to the book.

    Will not disappoint

    Life of Pi was amazing - beyond being a great story thanks to author Yaan Martel, the movie was simply great cinematography, sound effects, editing and vivid pictures, color and scenery. It was surprising to see how closely the movie followed the book. Cannot wait to see the movie again in 3D!

    It's up to you

    This is a beautiful movie with stunning visuals, vivid symbolism and life lessons that are spiritually provoking. It's really one of those glass half full / half empty type of proposals and the viewer will get out of it, what the viewer wants to receive from it. It's different, unusual and truly an accomplishment to have captured and delivered these ideas through film.

    Loved It!

    The movie was visually stunning. The most important factor for any story is the culmination and the Life of Pi was very clever in tying up this awesome tale.

    The Life of Pi--Go See it

    I went to see this movie with my husband and daughters. My daughters are 13 and 11. This movie was so visually AMAZING!! Sometimes with movies you either get all visual stimulation and no plot or the opposite, This movie, however, had both. We laughed, cried, and cheered. If you can't make it to the theater to see this(which you should REALLY try hard to see it on the big screen) definantly buy this movie when it releaases on dvd, blu-ray, or the almost extinct VHS. I'd be a little wary to show this movie to children younger than my girls because smaller children may get frighted from some of the scenes. They may also become upset about the fate of some of the animals. As always though it's parental discretion. Otherwise, this film was breathtaking to watch and the plot was at times funny, exciting, and tragic. I truly believe this is a must see and it was unanimous from my whole family. I hope you enjoy this film as much as we did!

    Surprised me

    I went to this movie curious as to how a computer generated tiger could carry a movie into an Academy Award nomination. Well the movie blew away any notion I had about computer generated effects. It was a thoughtful, suspenseful and beautiful movie. The acting, art direction, set design and technical effects were great. A must see and ok for ages 12 and older I would say. The movie keeps you thinking long after it is over. Easily one of the best movies I've ever seen.

    Profoundly moving!

    I went home after this movie contemplating an emotional voyage. The Life of Pi is an epic and soulful story, wrapped with visual projections of the masterful literary work from which the film originates. There are so many intricate details that reoccur in my mind as I reminisce the film. How can one live with oneself after having witnessed the tragic death and disintegration of one's family and livelihood, brutality and murder imposed on one's memory, and one's actions in direct conflict with one's cultural upbringing, even after living through such horrors and physically surviving having been stranded at sea for an inordinate amount of time? The exotically, fantastical story that Pi lives to recount is the very tool he forges during his tragedy to overcome losing everything, most importantly, his own humanity. Where having succeeded to survive physically is immaterial, Pi discovers a manner in which to survive spiritually, in order to reconcile with what has come before him.

    Magic At Sea

    You will never see another movie like this one. Thought provoking - cinematography is top notch. Richard Parker is a work of art.

    In the end however this movie is not about a rescue or a tiger or the loss of family - it suggests to take a moment or two - to think about one of Life's Big Questions - what is God's nature? Does He guide us or just let us be with our own free will and capabilities? Hmmm.

    You decide.

    See it - you'll be glad you did.

    Skilled Portrayal of the Book

    We really enjoyed the book and were a little reluctant to see the movie in case it might be cut up, changed or compromised.

    Silly us - this was the closest movie adaptation of a book I have ever seen. It wraps you in the humor, humanity, fear, hope and anxiety we loved initially.

    I agree completely with former reviewer, "edithpiaf" & "uberfan". Excellent movie. I LOVE LOVE LOVE animals, especially big cats so, of course, I cried when animals were killed, laughed when animals were in the picture, & cringed! Yes, it WAS a little slow at first, but as previously stated, this is necessary for the storyline/plot. There was beautiful scenery to see while getting the background story! I, too, stayed awake during the night thinking of the different meanings from the film & how one could compare the animals on the boat to the possible actual people! I now want to read the book!
