Underwhelmed

I was so excited for this movie but sorry to say it was not worth it, and definitely not worth watching in 3D. If all the unnecessary filler was cut, it would be 30 minutes, not 2 hours. In no way was this movie 'the next Avatar'. I was expecting a visual feast. The CGI in the clips edited for the trailers were absolutely beautiful. I was expecting to see many more breathtaking moments but I did not. The trailers showed all the scenes that were worth watching, and besides those few minutes, it was a big fat bore. There was way too much narration, it was way too slow, and the ending never ended but, at the same time seemed like an afterthought. They should have ended with the tiger walking into the jungle, or integrated the ending human story into the animal story. For example, utilizing flashback scenes when Pi explains what happened with his mother and the cook, would have made it flow with the style of rest of the film. Underwhelmed.

Couldn't hold back the tears on the sad parts, but then there was a great uplift throughout the story bringing as many smiles as there were tears. Loved it!! Will certainly buy to add to my collection of classics.

I heard of the book and knew not a whole lot about it. Was I incredibly surprised. This movie is just flat out incredible. It moved me, and has still has me thinking, and even feeling the movie, afterwards. Many have posted good summaries here and I'll just say that you have to see this film to really experience it. I'm surprised it is not doing better at the box office - it deserves any movie-goers attention to be seen on the big screen.

Went expecting the usual animal-human relationship and the least to say, the movie had nothing usual in it. A wonderful story line and an amazing journey. Never felt the full force of 3D magic in any recent movies except this one. A must watch.. Stunning visuals, the unusual story and exemplary acting makes it a movie to remember.. It might be a tad bit violent at a place or two for a small kid who goes expecting to see only happy friendly animals. Just that the movie shows animals as animals. :)

Nice to look at but...

There were setbacks to this movie. "Life of Pi," is visually gorgeous which is an identifiable trait of Ang Lee's style but the story of the film just doesn't measure up to the film's on-screen beauty. What does measure up though is the tense appeal of the drama in the film. This movie thrives off the dramatic tension between Pi and Richard Parker. Whether it is adversarial or sentimental, the two characters just deliver intensity whenever one or both is on the screen. The movie has amazing visual effects and that will appeal very well to the audience. The 3D also augments this visual appeal amazingly. This is a great coming-of-age drama but there are moments when the movie just lags. Screenwriter David Magee does a nice job creating the blueprint for Ang Lee to build the world this fantastical journey takes place but there are moments when there is disconnect and abstract symbolism leaves audiences scratching their heads."Life of Pi" is a good movie. More could have been done with it.
