Life of Pi
by
One of the most original films I've seen over the last twenty years, it's very typical of Ang Lee to expertly direct a film that provokes deep thought. The performances were excellent and real in their characters. Most remarkable is the amazing consistency in the portrayal of Pi throughout his life by the various actors of different ages. The CGI generation where used is in no way instrusive upon the story; quite the contrary, it is often difficult to discern them from the reality. I choose to say little about the story in this review because of the creation of spoilers for those who have not yet seen "Life of Pi," but let me say this: This is not one of those films today that try to overcome unimaginative or poor writing, acting, and/or direction with loads of spectacular special effects. Even in 3D, the viewer is impressed but not overwhelmed. I strongly recommmend this Ang Lee masterpiece.
