It's Brilliant but...

I went to Les Mis wanting to love it and I left loving it -- but there were moments I considered walking out. The score is brilliant and so is the cinematography but it's fair to say there are moments, especially in the first half, when the story line is slow and the operatic style (arias, recitatives and choruses) grows somewhat weary, especially if one is not a fan of opera. If you're into religious allegory, you might see Javert as Old Testament and Jean Valjean as New Testament -- each of them brilliant characters. I thought the brothel scenes were over-the-top compared to the rest of the film and had a Mel Brooks quality that didn't work for me. We saw Les Miserables in IMAX and it is awesome! I'm a complete fan of IMAX and I heard subtleties in the sound track of Les Miserables that I'd never noticed before. It is a definite "Must Experience!"

sweeping music, thought provoking theological and political themes, fine acting, touching story,... I am so fantastically impressed that the play and this film accomplished so much with 3 hours.

Les Miserables

Incredible adaptation of the stage production, yet not at all the stage production. Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman are both amazing. Russell Crowe was very disappointing as Javert. The major difference between this and a staged production is that this is a very "raw" production. Rather than "beautiful" singing, these performances are ... as I said, "raw." Hathaway's "I dreamed a dream," is such a visceral and in your face reflection of hopelessness, that if you aren't brought to tears, you have no soul! The close up filming of the actor's faces as they sing draws you in to their pain, love, resignation and triumph. YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!

Les Miserables captivates you as soon as it begins! I must have cried 6 times! Hugh Jackman and Anne Hatheway were absolutely amazing! The rest of the cast was brilliant as well! Highly recommend seeing it...especially if you are a Les Miserables fan! You will walk away singing :)

Coming from a Broadway musical background all I can say is BRAVO! This was a mesmerizing experience with phenomenal performances to encapsulate an experience beyond Broadway.
