If you love the stage production, you will love this movie!

This musical is my absolute favorite, and my expectations for the movie were (perhaps) too high. I knew I would come out disappointed on some level. That didn't happen! Yes, they left some things out and added some stuff in. These changes do not necessarily offset, but what makes this movie so worth it is the method of filming. The live singing was spectacular because it allowed the actors to improvise their acting with the songs. The effect was STUNNING. Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman both blew me away with their performances. As a huge fan of Colm Wilkinson, I loved his part as the Bishop. My favorite song is "Stars," and Russell Crowe was better than I expected him to be (bonus!). The cinematography was beautiful and allowed viewers access to scenery and characters that had been impossible to depict on stage. The costumes and orchestrations were beautiful. Oscar-worthy performances from Jackman and Hathaway for sure! Remember to bring tissues - you're gonna need them!

A fantastic adaptation

I'm a bit obsessed with the musical, it was one that I grew up listening to. I know every word and I know every change. At first I was very worried about the film adaptation, but having seen it three times now, I can honestly say that this is a triumph. There are definitely things that I can shake my head at, but they are so tiny and insignificant. It takes a minute to get used to the sound of live singing, and it's definitely not the best sung version of the score, but it is still heartbreaking and emotionally pleasing. I cried just as much during the film as I do when I see the show and I can't wait until the film comes out on blu-ray to own it. This is definitely not for everyone, but I think it really gets it right and definitely is a start to a new way to film musicals.

If you only go just to see Anne Hathaway's stunning performance it will be worth it!!!! There are some things I wish they did differently since I am a Broadway snob but it was a truly incredible performance!

Last time I cried this much was at "The Champ". Captured the essence of the book and the characters. Astounding feat. I was locked on the screen every moment. I loved the casting top to bottom.

GREAT - Even better the second time around .. .. The IMAX presentation (and SOUND) made it even better this time .. .. Spent so much time comparing it to the musical the first time, there wasn't enough time to really enjoy it .. .. But, sure enjoyed it in IMAX though!!! FANTASTIC
