    If you value anything that is humane...

    2 hours and 39.6 minutes of continuous, nonstop, ear piercing, brain numbing, life sucking, singing by Russel Crow and Hugh Jackman. It was the most seriously devastating experience that I have ever endured.

    Answer to the war on terror? No more rock music in gitmo, play this for them and the terrorists will rise up praying for Jesus' forgiveness in less then 90 minutes.

    It had potential, great story, great cinematography but GOODNESS STOP FREAKING SINGING, please for all that is good in the world, RUSSEL CROW STOP FREAKING SINGING.. STOP STOP, STOP Hugh jackman.. Please STOOOOOOPPPPP..I don't think more then 3 actual spoken words without a melody were said, IT WAS ALL SINGING... ARRRGGGHHH it wasn't fair and near inhumane to the human psyche.

    As I sit and write this all I am able to recall of the past 3 hours are magnificent scenes and a distinct white noise, not a song or melody.. just a low pitched tone of despair…

    Actors in a musical should be able to sing!

    When will Hollywood understand that star power does not always work? I would have rather seen no name actors who could really belt out the numbers that those of us who have been fans of Les Miz have come to expect. Thank goodness someone had the good sense to make sure Colm Wilkinson was in this film. One could hear chatter in the theater as soon as you saw (and heard) him. If you are a long time fan you will know who I am talking about.
    I really, really wanted to love this film, but I did not. I always at least tear up during the live performance but not this film. Parts of the movie were simply odd and awkward.

    A creaking ponderous steamroller of crap

    This movie is ****. I mean, from the sewers of France that our hero Jean Valjean goes sloshing around in ****. Sitting through this will make YOU Les Miserables. As a stage production, Les Miserables only worked because of incredible vocal performances; the score is paper thin and ploddingly repetitive. As a movie, with fine actors giving terrible vocal performances, I literally had to leave the theater before my head exploded out of boredom. I only came back in because I couldn't leave my 90 year old father in there alone. I understand that musicals have to have characters talk/singing their way through linking action, but the constant use of short meaningless musical phrases for such brilliant lines as "Will you go with me?" "You know I can't" became quickly unbearable.

    The film plods on and on and on and refuses to end. It's an atrocious misfire and a waste of about $200,000,000.

    Les Miz was wonderful!

    ?Les Miz? movie was sooooo good! Yes, as good as they exclaimed in previews and reviews! Much better than expected from a movie made from a live stage show. Of course the singing can?t be as tremendous as live voices on Broadway or the equivalent, but it was quite good. To its credit, the movie did not try to add scenes, places and explanations that weren?t in the stage show. Many parts, especially the early ones with Fantine, were actually ?improved? in the movie because they made me feel so much sadder and cry even more for her terrible life and lost dreams. Yes, I cried through the movie at the same places and for the same songs and happenings as I do every time I see the musical. The only problem with the movie: it was 2 ½ hours long?which was okay and welcomed?but without an intermission as we have in the theatre: long time to sit with beer and Bloody Mary inside.

    Anne Hathaway is awesome, but movie so-so

    I went to this movie really expecting to love it. I have seen and loved the musicals in London and New York. Nevertheless, I can only rate this so-so. The camera movement & the constant gritty close-ups of the actors was distracting from the story. An intermission was badly needed too. Kudos, though, to Anne Hathaway, who was awesome!

    am I missing something?

    My daughter & I just went to see this yesterday. We thought it was horrible. Number 1, if you're going to have your star do most of the singing, i.e., Hugh Jackman, can you AT LEAST get someone who doesn't have a voice that could take paint off walls? Oh, my God. His voice is so annoying and horrible that I found myself literally covering my ears. This movie was WAY too long. It just went on & on & on & on. I have the distinct impression that people who have favorably reviewed this debacle feel that if they give it the bad review that it deserves that they won't be considered intellectually "with it." Well, I DON'T CARE. It was HORRIBLE & I am an intelligent, thoughtful person. If you want to be depressed for 3 hrs, go ahead. The biggest flaw is NOT ONE actor in this movie had a PHENOMENAL voice, which is what these beautiful songs deserved. My favorite characters were Helena Bonham Carter & Sacha Baron Cohen, the Inn keepers. They were hysterical BUT not worth 3 hrs of life!

    Les Miserables

    The filming was well done, spectacular scenery. I have seen the stage version of Les Miserables 8 times. And I have read the book. The acting was good, and I enjoyed the film overall. However, the singing left a lot to be desired. Especially it grated my ears when Hugh Jackman sang "Bring HIm Home". where he could barely reach the top notes. And Russell Crowe did not have the deep bass/baritone presentation for Javert. If you have seen the videos of the 10th or 25th anniversaries of this stage musical, you can see why both Jean Valjean and Javert were really miscast in the movie version. This is basically an opera sung in English, and outstanding singers should have been chosen to do these magnificent roles. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I would give this movie version about a 6.
