Les Miserables

After seeing the Broadway play twice, I was hoping that the film would capture my heart as well. And it did. Remembering that it is a time piece, it showed the wretchedness of France in the 1800's, the suffering of the people under a horrible government, and the hopefulness in the hearts of the people for a better life one day. Each character is totally unique, the singing is beautiful, and I found this movie to be emotionally unforgettable. Ann Hathaway is deserving of any award for which she is nominated. The difference between the play and the movie??? The movie brings the characters face to face -- you see the pain, the anquish, the heartbreak, and the hope. I loved it. It will truly stay my favorite. Thank you Victor Hugo for putting this story to paper. And thanks to Claude-Michel Schönberg for the music, Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel for the French lyrics, and Herbert Kretzmer for the English adaptation. It is truly a work of art.

Not disappointed

Went to see Les Mis without great expectations. I was not disappointed. Way, way too long. I could not believe that was Hugh Jackman singing. Where did his voice go??? I did believe that was Russell Crowe singing, because he is not a singer!!!! He is an actor. Was it not possible to find a singer and an actor in one body?????? Ann Hathaway was fantastic. Too bad she was gone in the first 30 minutes. Yes, cinematography was beautiful. Yes it was an epic. Yes, if you loved the play, you will love the movie, all 2hours and 37 minutes of it. Sorry not to be on the Les Mis bandwagon. It's back to my old favorite Phantom of the Opera movie today to help me try to forget yesterday's disaster. SK

Les Miserables

I had seen this play in the theater and I wasn't sure how is would transfer onto film. I was pleasantly surprised. It evoked many emotions. The theater was completely packed, even though it was Christmas morning at 11:00. It was so quiet that you could hear a pin drip. Tears flowed throughout the movie. If I had to pick one word to describe the movie, it would be POWERFUL!

disappointing

I knew Russell Crowe wasn't going to be a strong singer from the trailers, but I was surprised at how disappointing Hugh Jackman's singing voice sounded. It was very nasally. And he could not pull off the best number of the show "Bring Him Home". And I'm not sure why the director felt the need to have strange camera angles and have the camera up everyone's noses the whole time. Too much cutting back and forth between close-ups. Very distracting. Overall, still love the music (and part of my problem is that I have the amazing original Broadway cast recording in my brain), but the next time I see Les Miz will be on the stage.

Someone Give Anne Hathaway an Oscar!

If you're a fan of Les Miserables and/or musicals... this is a must go. If not, this may be a long movie for you. This rendition of Les Miserables does not follow the Broadway show or the novel verbatim. The general story is there, but several character relationships are disconnected from their as written roles. Despite being streamlined, the story is cohesive. The acting in this movie is beyond top shelf. That being said, Hugh Jackman has a tough time pulling off the vocals and Russell Crowe's characterization of Javert doesn't have the curt and clipped vocals expected of his character. Anne Hathaway absolutely steals the show with her performance. Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter provided a nice touch of comedy. I found the visuals just ok, but I'm recently spoiled from the amazingly beautiful sets of Anna Karenina. That's less important as Les Miserables focuses heavily on the characters faces. If you like my reviews, add me as a fan. I'll add you back
