Les Miz is one of the best movie versions of a musical EVER

I've seen the Broadway or London version of this musical at least five times. What Tom Hooper accomplished with the large screen is to give you the close-ups and panoramic views of Paris that you can't get in a live production. Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are surely going to get Academy Award nominations. Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter are fiendishly delightful. Russell Crowe holds his own, although he couldn't perform this role in a stage version as his voice isn't strong enough. Still, it's a wonderful story told wonderfully!

Hugh Jackman's acting is stunning as always. But the surprise in this movie, is Anne Hathaway. She blew me away; I honestly did not think she had it in her. She is always cast in these chick-flick-like silly rolls. She deserved that Oscar. Great Job! It was a really good version of this Masterpiece. It kept my attention the whole time and did not lag. Definitely worth watching at least once. 7.5 out of 10! Excellent!

A Valiant Effort

I have to preface this review by saying I am a huge fan of this musical. It is my absolute favorite, and I have seen it countless times on tour, on Broadway and regionally-big theaters and small. The film reminded me of one of my favorite staged productions which was in a small theater in the round. Hard to imagine if you have not seen it, but being so close to the actors and in such an intimate setting provided a much more intense experience emotionally. The film succeeds on this level, with the right amount of agnst and emotion, particularly in Hathaway's big number, "I Dreamed A Dream", and Redmayne's "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables". Not a dry eye in the house. Where the film was less successful was in the rest of its casting. Big names sell movies, but did Les Miserables need this when millions upon millions world-wide have seen and love this show? Crowe was awful, Jackman strained, Seyfried-why? Also, where was the gorgeous score? It never seemed to get off the ground.
