Perhaps best-known for the musical West Side Story, composer Leonard Bernstein was one of the most accomplished and influential musicians of the 20th century. For fifteen years, beginning in 1958, Bernstein attempted to turn the youth of America on to music through a series of televised performances called Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts. Over the years the term "classical music" has grown to encompass many styles, but true classical music is actually of specific eras and composers. In this episode, Bernstein offers viewers a lesson on the birth and evolution of the genre. Originally broadcast on January 24, 1959, Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts: What is Classical Music? features pieces by Handel, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and Haydn. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi
