Poor imitation of Adaptation
We were fortunate enough to see a session which had a Q&A with Ed Norton and the director afterwards. The director said he wanted to make the movie coherent and surprising but admitted this is tough to accomplish. Unfortunately Leaves of Grass is neither. The pacing is all wrong, whole scenes feel like they're just filling up time and there is a lack of any hook to make us interested in what's going to happen next. Norton's performance is solid but not outstanding and the rest of the cast seems wooden and two dimensional, leaving me to think that the direction must have been poor. Admittedly the movie was apparently made in 36 days on a tight budget but that being the case, the time and money would have been better spent tightening up the story and plot lines and not trying to cover so much ground with such poor execution.
