La Traviata - Rebraodcast

Wonderful production, though very minimalist as far as the scenery and the costumes are concerned. The singing/voices were equally wonderful, the "acting" outstanding though there were a few times when the principals were not able to reach a particularly high note.

La Traviata Comes to Life at the Cinema

Yesterday's encore performance of La Traviata, on the HD screen at Tysons 16 Theaters in Tysons Corner, VA, was a prime example of the success of this project by the Metropolitan Opera, which brings its productions closer to people who may not have a chance to see them on the stage in New York City. The theater was full, and there was quite a long line waiting patiently before the doors opened at 6 o'clock. The show was well worth the wait. Soprano Natalie Dessay, who in addition to a beautiful voice is a good actress, gave what to me was the best performance among a very distinguished cast. The audience was so impressed that here and there applause broke out after many of her arias, timidly because people are not used to clapping in the middle of a film. Congratulations to the Met. And please tell us that it's all right to thank you and your fine artists with applause, even at the movies.

The show was great, especially Dessay. She didn't leave anything behind. Polenzani and Hvorostovsy were wonderful also.

I saw the movie together with my wife, and two friends who are not regular opera goers. We all thought the performance was great and very enjoyable. Next week my wife and I will be visiting you to see :Wagner's Dream" followed by "Das Reingold", I have been attending professional opera productions since I was 14 years old, over 60 years ago, and I'm still hooked! Michael J Smith.

We have seen La Traviata on stage four times, including the performance we just saw at the Met Summer Encore. La Traviata is one of the greatest of the classics and this performance was the best we have seen! The staging was at first disconcerting but, as the opera played out, my wife and I came to see it as even more profound than if with a more traditional set. The HD Encore brought the characters, the emotions and performance to life like we have never before experienced; we felt so much more connected to the story and the characters, and the acoustics were superb ... it felt like our own private performance. Except for the excitement of the crowd, we enjoyed this every bit as much, if not more, than being at the Met. Since going to the Met is, for many reasons, not currently an option, the HD theater performances have made it possible for us to continue to experience the joy of opera. Thank you!
