Turkish filmmaker Sinan Cetin directs the absurd tragi-comic drama Sergeant Shakespeare. Police Sergeant Cemil (Kadir Inanir) decides to stage a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves at his oppressive police station. He hopes to win a TV competition in order to save his dying daughter Su (Pelin Batu). The directorial duties are assumed by drug dealer Tatu (Okan Bayulgen), who claims to have been a star in his youth. Prince Charming is played by a detoxed bum, homeless kids play the dwarves, and a hooker (Mujde Ar) plays the Queen. She literally breaks a leg, and the role is then played in drag by a gangster (Ozkan Ugur). Soon problems occur between the hostile evironment of the police station and the television cameras, eventually resulting in a military invasion. The U.N. arrives and mistakes the rehearsal for a rehabilitation program. The conclusion finds the performance of the play taking an emotional turn with Cemil in the role of the Queen. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
