This film was excellent.
The stories told were emotional and eye opening.
I wouldn't want to show this movie to a child, the idea of kids being sent away to detention centers and losing significant years of their development is shocking.
The film was well made and told the story from many perspectives, but it was hard to associate with the judges sending kids basically to jail after watching.

Kids for Cash is a powerful and affecting movie about two things: a shocking scandal--juvenile courts shipping kids off to residential facilities in which the judges had a financial interest--and a troubling public policy--so-called "zero tolerance" in public schools, which treats every infraction of school rules as a matter for the juvenile courts. The movie is built around a narrative of the investigation and trial of the judges involved in the alleged abuse. This is gives the movie drama and even a bit of suspense. Its real power, however, derives from the tension between the affecting first person accounts by the children and their parents and the explanations and justifications by the accused judges. It is very engaging and affecting. It is also very troubling. In all respects a model of what documentary can be.

Kids for Cash is about so much more than the outrageous scandal that brought down two juvenile judges in a PA county. It's about our priorities and morays as a society. How do we live with ourselves paying just over $10,000 per year to educate a child and $88,000 to incarcerate her? Why are we so punitive? Why do schools insist on "Zero Tolerance" policies that criminalize behavior that often stems from the impulsivity of the adolescent brain? While the kick-back scheme depicted in the movie is deplorable, the real depravity is juvenile court judges who rip children out of their families and deprive them of an education by incarcerating them for behavior that could be much more effectively addressed in less restrictive ways. Don't miss this movie.

A really powerful message throughout the movie. I was fortunate enough to catch this in NYC before it's release. A must-see for documentary enthusiasts.
