A picturesque slice of West African village life is the focus of this slow-paced but interesting drama from novice director Paul Zoumbara. The dramatic tension in the story is created by Pierre (Yacine Tall), a young farmer who has new ideas about planting his crops for a better yield, and three authoritative men who oppose him: the village chief, a sleazy merchant/money lender, and Pierre's father. Pierre's simple desire for modernized farming is supported by his girlfriend Maria (Salimata Samake), but neither had envisioned the kind of opposition they now face.
