Old Fashioned Once Upon A Time Tale

In this age of appealing to the lowest common denominator (which admittedly this movie does with the whole "giant chef" scene), its refreshing to see an old fashioned fairytale yarn. The actors turn in fine performances (Stanley Tucci's scenery-chewing villain is repulsively delightful). It's also a family friendly romp, although some of the scenes get a little scary for younger children. The story does also toe the edge of running too long, but why carp? It's fun. Take a break from the Hollywood pop culture sludge machine and buy some magic beans.

Entertaining, original

Very entertaining, original - I don't ever recall Jack and the Beanstalk this way, but maybe I've been wrong all these years. No matter, this film takes the tale to unique/imaginative territory and it just worked. The story takes you on the ride, not thee effects/3D - that's what matters. Acting across the board was excellent - nothing overboard, no cheesy lines common with such theatrical depictions of tales. If anything, you're left wanting more!

I was entertained. It wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. Solid special effects. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Ok so I went into this movie hoping for some excitement and some nostalgia; what I got was boredom. After the first hour I just really didn't care anymore. The best part was the fact that it was in 3D. If you haven't saw it, take my word for it and see something else.

Visuals a big jumpy - just as good in 2D?

I enjoyed the romance, the humor, and the gorgeous scenery. Story was fun but not gripping. My sixteen-year old niece thought it was wonderful and wants to get the DVD when it comes out. I fell asleep and missed one of the best scenes where a giant picked his nose, pigs in blankets were for supper, and one of the heroes escaped being baked in a pie... I found the CG very jumpy and had a little trouble understanding the giants' gravelly voices. Also had a little trouble understanding why all the giants were men - how do they reproduce??? Ewan McGregor was eye-candy although his posh accent seemed incongruous! I think this movie would be just as enjoyable in 2D.
