'Moonrise Kingdom,' 'Silver Linings Playbook' Dominate Spirit Awards Noms; Are They Destined for Oscar Night Glory?

Fresh off of a Best Feature win at last night's Gotham Awards, Moonrise Kingdom picked up more momentum as the awards season officially gets underway. This morning, the film picked up five Independent Spirit Award nominations including nods in best feature, best director (Wes Anderson), best supporting actor (Bruce Willis) as well as best screenplay and cinematography.

Keeping pace with Moonrise was Silver Linings Playbook, which just launched in theaters over Thanksgiving weekend. The film also picked up nominations in best feature, director and screenplay categories, as well as nods to leads Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

While it's still very early in the awards race season, it's pretty safe to say that Moonrise and Silver Linings both have a good chance of picking up a best picture Oscar nomination.

Indie darling Beasts of the Southern Wild also fared well picking up three nominations, while Matthew McConaughey picked up two acting nominations, one for his lead performance in Killer Joe and another for a supporting role in Magic Mike. Click here for the full list of nominees.

Since the Spirit Awards were launched back in 1985, only two winners have gone on to capture the best picture Oscar – Platoon and last year's The Artist. Plenty of Spirit Award nominated films, especially recently, have earned best picture nominations though, including Lost in Translation, Sideways, Brokeback Mountain, Juno, The Wrestler and Little Miss Sunshine.

The Spirit Award winners will be announced on February 23, the day before the Academy Awards. Do you think Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook will be up for best picture nominations when the Oscars roll around?
