Another slow opening weekend of wide releases at the box office offers a variety of indie film choices. From a mind-bending thriller to raunchy bridesmaids and bloody chainsaws, let's see what's arriving in theaters this weekend...
Corporate brands have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds in the dark, mind-bending thriller from first-time directors Alexander Doulerain and Jamie Bradshaw. Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski and Jeffrey Tambor star.
If you think this is just going to be another one of those films that chronicles some beautiful unknown model on her rise to fame, think again. Girl Model chronicles the trafficking of Russian children to the Japanese fashion market through the eyes of a 13-year-old Siberian girl and the American scout that discovered her. The catwalk will never look the same after viewing this documentary.
The bawdy BBC series makes the jump to the big screen. The film centers on four geeky high school friends who set out on a wild booze-filled vacation packed with "outrageous sexual shenanigans, out-of-control party antics and cheekily rude humor." Kind of sounds like the British version of Project X.
Toys in the Attic
Forest Whitaker, Joan Allen and Cary Elwes are among the actors who lend their voices to this animated fantasy flick. The title pretty much explains what's going on as there's a bunch of toys in an attic who must save one of their own that has been kidnapped. It's like a stop-motion version of Toy Story, but without the relentless marketing ads and catch phrases.
For those suffering from Bridesmaids withdrawal comes this raunchy comedy written and directed by first-timer Leslye Headland. Fans of the Hangover franchise will find this plot sounding rather familiar – on the night before an old friend's wedding, three bridesmaids go searching for a little fun and end up getting more than they bargained for. The film stars Kristen Dunst, Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fisher and Rebel Wilson.
Rec 3: Genesis
Yes, they're still making REC movies and this latest installment finds a happy couple on their wedding having to suddenly deal with a strange illness that befalls the guests. During the course of the violent chaos that unfolds, the couple become separated and must find their way back to one another before it's too late. It's been a pretty forgettable year for the horror movie genre but perhaps REC 3 will stand out among the rest, buzzing chainsaw and all.
