Golden Globe Awards Recap: 'The Artist' Continues to Win; Scorsese, Streep Score Surprise Wins

By: Derrick Deane on January 15, 2012 at 8:43PM Comments (2)

And so another Golden Globes has come and gone. Much of the anticipation going into tonight’s show centered on just how much leeway NBC would allow host Ricky Gervais. Aside from a few opening jokes about Kim Kardashian and a Justin Bieber joke, Gervais was pretty much unseen for most of the show. He did return toward the latter part of the show to jokingly call Colin Firth a racist and Natalie Portman foolish for having a baby. He summed it up best when he said, "This is great to have a job where I can get drunk, say what I want and they still pay me."

But enough about Gervais. The evening held some surprises in the crop of award winners. The biggest surprises were Martin Scorsese winning the best director award for Hugo and Meryl Streep besting the favored Viola Davis (The Help) for best actress in a drama for The Iron Lady.

The Artist continued to rack up the awards, scoring wins for best picture - comedy or musical, best actor for Jean Dujardin and best score.

Some of the momentum gained by The Help from the Critics Choice Movie Awards on Thursday night may have cooled off, but the movie still won best supporting actress for Octavia Spencer. Still, it lost out to The Descendants for best motion picture - drama and Madonna in an upset for original song.

Steven Spielberg scored a win with The Adventures of Tintin picking up the best animated feature award over the favored Rango. His War Horse was shut out.

Several highlights of the night included George Clooney joking about Michael Fassbender’s frontal nudity in Shame, Madonna referring to Gervais as a girl, and Seth Rogen unabashedly stating that he was hiding an erection while standing next to Kate Beckinsale. Uggi, the dog from The Artist, also stole the limelight during the acceptance speech for The Artist’s best picture win.

You can see the full list of film winners below, plus more coverage in our Awards Watch. And let us know in the comments, what was your favorite moment from this year’s Golden Globes, and how do you think Gervais did?

Why is Scorsese winning for 'Hugo' such a surprise? It was a brilliant film and he did a spectacular job. Don't see how that's a surprise in the slightest.

This just makes me wanna see the artist so much more. I was pretty disappointed at Ricky's performance, since he was hardly there. It's nothing compared to how he did last year
