  • Must Go!

More intense than any car chase ever!

Incendies is the best movie I've seen in years. Rife with anticipation, and painfully emotional, this movie had me on the edge of my seat for over two hours. Unlike other movies that build to a climax, Incendies grasps your attention from the very start. And the twist at the end was completely unexpected. Best of all was the superb acting - emotional and not over-wrought. It would help to know from the beginning where the movie is set; it's in a fictional country (read, Lebanon). The confusing clashes between the religious clans sends the viewer off kilter, intentionally creating an atmosphere reflective of the harsh realities of war. In short, Incendies is a MUST SEE move.

  • Oh No!

    Depressing!

As if war between religious groups in the Middle East wasn't depressing enough, this movie takes it a whole step farther. If you're looking for an uplifting film, this isn't it. If you're looking for a believable film, this isn't it. It's incredulous and very disturbing, and it's also hard to follow. For example, where exactly does this movie take place? It never says .... This is a bleak film with a horrifying denouement that is as sickening as it is incredulous. Lebanon and the other countries in the Middle East have enough fodder for film fare. Stretching and creating this tale goes too far and creates a repulsive and hopeless movie experience. This movie isn't for kids. It isn't fit for adults either.

  • Oh No!

    I wanted to kill myself

This was the most depressing movie that I've ever tried to watch. I love art house movies as much as anyone but why is it that these films often focus on the most miserable aspects of life in order to move viewers emotionally? There have been plenty of great films that have had incredible emotional impact without being utterly depressing and upsetting.

I'm also sick of foreign films that include underlying political statements about the Middle East religious war. If those cultures choose to raise one generation after another only to continue their violent insanity, then excuse me for losing emphathy for either side. If I start shooting at my neighbors kids and he ends up killing mine, then who's really to blame, you know?

My tip for anyone considering this movie is to pop yourself some popcorn then spend two hours dwelling on the most horrible, upsetting things that you can possibly dream up. You'll save the ticket price and have the same miserable experience.
