Director Valerio Zurlini (DESERT OF THE TARTARS) concocted this thinly-disguised homage to murdered Congo rebel leader, Patrice Lamumba, starring Woody Strode. Zurlini shapes the narrative as biblical allegory, with Strode’s non-violent resistance leader, Maurice Lalubi, betrayed by a comrade, then martyred by white mercenaries. Ripe for re-appraisal.
