A teenager becomes the talk of her town when she reveals she talks with religious icons in this sharp comedy from director Roberta Torre. Manuela (Carla Marchese) is a thirteen-year-old growing up bored in a run-down suburb in Sicily. Manuela doesn't get along very well with her mom Rita (Donatella Finocchiaro) or dad Guilio (Giuseppe Fiorello), and her part-time job cleaning up at a beauty salon brings her little money or useful experience. One day, a statue of the Virgin Mary is discovered to have lost its head, and Manuela steps forward to declare that Mary appeared to her in a dream and told her where the statue's missing noggin can be found. When the statue and its head are reunited, Manuela discovers there are a plenty of people willing to pay to ask questions of someone with a direct line to the blessed virgin, and she's happy to help them. But is Manuela sincere or just a smart kid pulling a scam on some gullible people? I Baci Mai Dati (aka Lost Kisses) received its American premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
