Excellent film about the writing of the famous poem and the immediate impact on its times vis a vis the obscenity trial relating to its publication. James Franco does a remarkable transformation. If you love the poem, you will love this film. If you know of the poem, but don't know it well, a great intro.

Unique film. Highly recommend it. James Franco was very good and the animation was really great and tracked the poem so well. You will understand Allen Ginsberg very well after seeing this film , to say nothing of his epic work Howl.

Artists, biolovers, historians, and those who love well made, mature, cerebral movies, will want to see HOWL. I just saw it on cable; it wasn't playing anywhere :( Not for kids under fifteen; older kids need to see this movie w/a parent. Franco is a shoe-in for an Oscar nom..
Madman's P.Hamm was explosively pertinent in this bioanimationassist presentation. Must honor Mr. Strahan sp? w/his controlled self-righteous expressions. Pass the popcorn, pls. .

This is one of the best films that I have seen in years. As someone who does not have an extensive background in literature, I found this movie instructive, as well as amazing. The mixed style (animation and film) of the movie reminded me of Julie Taymor's Frida, and I found it made the film a more mind-blowing experience, like that of Allen Ginsberg's work, because of those effects.

Saw it last night. What some reviews don't mention -- and what you really need to know -- is that a very large portion of this movie is an animated cartoon -- literally, a cartoon with cartoon figures and action which presumably somehow illuminates the poetry of Allen Ginsberg. It's painful and embarrassing to watch. It was a shock to see that, and to see the entire context of Ginsberg's life reduced to recreating some scenes out of old photographs and a very stagey poetry reading. A missed opportunity for what could have been a great film.
