San Francisco Chronicle | Carla Meyer

The less in control Smith and his co- stars Eva Mendes and Kevin James appear, the better Hitch becomes, until it's rather delightful. Read full review

For much of its length, the premise seems less wilted than you'd guess. This is because, for one thing, Mendes gives as good as she gets. Read full review

Hitch works best when it's a buddy comedy, with Smith and James having a blast as smooth Yoda and jiggly Jedi. Read full review

Los Angeles Times | Carina Chocano

Romantic comedies have become so cannibalistic lately that Hitch stands out for what seem like major innovations by comparison. Read full review

    Chicago Sun-Times | Roger Ebert

The premise is intriguing, and for a time it seems that the Date Doctor may indeed know things about women that most men in the movies are not allowed to know, but the third act goes on autopilot just when the Doctor should be in. Read full review

The New York Times | Dana Stevens

An average romantic comedy put together with enough professionalism to keep your cynicism momentarily at bay, featuring good-looking actors who also, in this case, seem like pretty nice people. Read full review

Will Smith has an easy charm, and this labored romantic farce works it hard. Too hard. Read full review

    Entertainment Weekly | Owen Gleiberman

Will Smith, taking a break from summer sci-fi smashfests, certainly shows a gift for modulation. Far from coasting, he plays a world expert at romance by ratcheting his charm up and down in supple, exacting degrees. Read full review

Considerably heavier on romance than comedy, Hitch stitches together relatively few laughs but generates enough goodwill and energy. Read full review

The Hollywood Reporter | Michael Rechtshaffen

An unwieldy, excessively talky affair, unintentionally exhibiting all the clunky stops and starts and self-conscious ramblings of a particularly awkward first date. Read full review

Information for Parents
Common Sense Media says Iffy for 13+ Will Smith charms again; best for teens and up.
What Parents Need to Know Parents need to know that there is some strong language (one f-word), alcohol (including drinking as a response to a bad day), and sexual situations and references. But parents should also know that this movie comes down very strongly on the side of romance. It takes kissing very seriously. A couple who have a one-night stand are very unhappy with the outcome (for different reasons) and there is a character who sexually exploits women whose behavior is portrayed as reprehensible. The focus of this movie is on romance and lasting love. Another strength of the movie is its color-blind casting with diverse characters sharing friendships and romantic relationships.
  • Families can talk about how it can be nerve-wracking to try to make a good impression on the opposite sex, especially someone who seems very desirable. What do you think of Hitch's rules and advice? They could also talk about the idea that you should "begin each day as if it were on purpose." What does it mean to be "all about the short game?"
