    Not for non-believers...

    by Da Rev

"Head" is classic absurdist cinema, as filtered through a cannabinoid-influenced sensibility. However, though I do personally love this film, I have no illusion that it would strike either fear or indifference in those whose tastes are more "generic".

Luckily enough, I was able to enjoy this film in the warm company of like-minded moviegoers at a recent 40th anniversary event at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. I'm quite sure that when this movie debuted, it was less understood and enjoyed -- but that doesn't make it any less important of an offering to those who study the history (and the mystery) of late '60s/early '70s cinema.

    Head

No story line, just zaniness throughout.

Here is how I would describe it in more detail. Take the script, shred it well, put it back together as best you can. Take that "restored" script, read it from the backside as you produce the film!

Great to see the Monkees in a movie. If you like the Monkees see their film.

    HEAD

So many people commented about how they "hope to understand HEAD more after this viewing." I thoroughly enjoyed my third viewing, which I thought would be very different from my first two experiences decades ago. I am pleased to announce that i didn't understand it this time any more than the last! YIPPEE! I remembered a majority of the lines, and I delighted in the anticipation of some of the whimsical yet dark humor, and the young faces on screen that had marked and impacted so many of us. It was delightful to have some of the blanks filled in by Peter, Davy, Bobby and Chip after the show. I didn't stay for the viewing of all the shows after the break because it was just getting too late for the commute/workday the next day. I sure wish the event could have been on a weekend so that it could have started at noon, or early afternoon. I think the TV show viewing, interviews, etc., should have taken place before the viewing of the movie...just my personal preference. Great movie!

    NOW, I get it.

Back when I was young and unsavvy, I found this movie to be a "head scratching" experience.

Now as I've gotten older and more aware of the world, HEAD begins to make sense; and I get what the writers were trying to say. And in THESE times, it surely begins to come into focus quite clearly.

To boil it down: war is wrong, and don't be suckered into believing what you see in the movies and on TV is reality.

I'm certainly not saying the Monkees were value-less (I still love the music) - but there ARE "manufactured" stars (Miley, Paris, Hanson, Jonas Brothers, et al) who are just after your money, and don't necessarily feed your soul.

These are SOME of the things the movie was trying to say - just the tip of the philosophical iceberg.

    Great event for Monkees fans!

    by copax7

This special screening of "Head" was amazing. Having only seen the film on DVD, it was a completely different experience seeing it on the big screen. The film is a real oddity but full of surprises and some terrific songs (including two that were written by Carole King, Gerry Goffin, and Toni Stern). In addition, having Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Bobby Hart, and Chip Douglas there in person (and a pre-recorded intro by Mickey Dolenz) was fantastic. An added bonus was being able to watch the pilot for the series and four additional episodes (along with the original commercials). An incredilble, jam-packed evening of Monkees mayhem!
