The 2-hour pilot for the marathon TV cop series Hawaii Five-O was unveiled on September 20, 1968; the series itself premiered the following week. In the opener, Honolulu special officer Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) investigates the death of a close friend. Purportedly an accident, the death was arranged by Red Chinese master spy Wo Fat (Khigh Diegh). Captured by his communist foe, McGarrett is subjected to a brainwashing session straight out of The Perils of Pauline. In the Hawaii 5-O pilot, McGarrett's assistant Danny ("Book him, Danno") was played by Tim O'Kelly, while the governor of Hawaii was portrayed by Lew Ayres; in the series proper, O'Kelly and Ayres were replaced, respectively, by James MacArthur and Richard Denning. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
