It is somehow fitting that the sixth and final season of the adult Western Have Gun, Will Travel was launched with the series' long-overdue origins episode. In "Genesis," a flashback reveals how a man called Paladin (Richard Boone) became a professional gunslinger, after killing a dangerous fugitive outlaw -- also played by Richard Boone! This episode was directed by William Conrad, who also essays a key supporting role. Later sixth season episodes are more impressive for their casts than their storylines, even though Star Trek's Gene Roddenberry had become the series' principal writer. "Marshal of Sweetwater" features as its title character David White, in a role far removed from his portrayal of bombastic Larry Tate on Bewitched. Similarly, Edgar Buchanan, an actor most closely associated with comedy relief roles, is anything but funny in "Man in an Hourglass." And Charles Bronson, on the verge of superstardom, essays another memorable Have Gun, Will Travel guest performance as Sheriff Jim Redrock in "Brotherhood." The series ends on a quiet note with the episode "Face of a Shadow." Even if CBS had wanted to renew Have Gun, Will Travel, Richard Boone was already committed to a weekly anthology series, The Richard Boone Show, which featured a number of former Have Gun guest actors -- Harry Morgan, Robert Blake, Warren Stevens, Jeanette Nolan -- appearing in repertory. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
