    Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

    I agree:
    "In appearance and tone, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is much more stylishly gothic than the earlier films. It oozes doom. Violins shimmer dissonantly; storm clouds gather ominously; Hogwarts, for once, looks like the gray and forbidding castle it always was. This is dark, difficult stuff; and it only gets darker in the saga's seventh and final chapter, to be split into two films."

    Half-Baked Prince

    I didn't mind that the 3D portion of the iMax version lasted for only the first 12 minutes. What caught me off guard was that this movie only tells the first half of JK Rowland's story, and that I'll have to wait at least another year to see the rest of it. I suppose any Harry Potter fan already knew this going in, but the result felt thin.

    On the other hand, the photography (and effects) were luscious and engrossing. For that, I DO recommend paying a bit extra for the iMax version.

    IMAX 3D is NOT worth it

    Only the first 12 minutes of the movie are in 3D and only a minute or two of that are even decent 3D sequences. Don't waste the extra money on the IMAX 3D experience, just go see the movie in a normal theater. When they give you an option to get a refund BEFORE the movie even starts, you know it's not going to be what you expected and they have obviously received a number of complaints.

    Two thumbs up!

    One from me, one from my son. He's eleven and has read all the books, so here's what he thinks:

    "I thought it was a good movie. Obviously, reading the book makes it a little less enjoyable because they have to cut and change some things. I thought that they made it very well for the time they had and they didn't make it too long. I liked the 3D because none of the movies have been like that before. I think it makes it more realistic and kind of sucks you into the movie right at the beginning. I really liked how the parts in the book that were difficult to take and scary were made a little bit better for younger viewers. Overall, I'd rate it a 4 out of 5 (pretty good)."

    Pretty dang great

    It's been a while since I've read the book, so I don't know what all the hubbub has been about the movie not being true to the book. The movie works. The story makes sense, and there's the "Empire Strikes Back" cliffhanger ending that says the endgame fo rthe series is coming soon.

    It was curious and amusing to see the life-and-death stakes of the main story playing counterpoint to the soap-opera teen romances between the characters. In the world of a teenager, who's dating whom carries just as much weight as the fate of the school and its students, and the movie did a surprising thing in actually creating that duality for me.

    Forget the book for a minute and just watch and enjoy the movie. It's really well crafted, and well performed by a better-all-the-time cast.
