Definitely a new twist on the fairy tale, but ... didn't love it. Don't know what I was expecting, but just didn't do it for me. Slightly entertaining but mostly boring. Kinda spoofy. A little corny. Somewhat predictable. A pinch of gory. Glad I had a free ticket.

We liked it! But we like those cheesy movies, like Twlight(THIS IS WAY BETTER), Van Helsen,.
Will watch part 2 , if they make it.
R for the "F word" about 5 times.

I have to say that I went to see this more out of wish fulfillment than anything. I mean, the fairy tale is one of my favorites and I really wanted to see Gretel as more of a strong female character. While we do see that she is take charge and independent, the story centers on her pining for meaning and loss of parents. Once you get past the fact that this strong woman runs to her brother to solve problems or needs to be saved no less than 3 times in this movie, you have a story of Gretel coming of age to understand what she is; apparently more powerful than she understands, but reluctant to use said power for unknown reasons.
Hansel has a love interest that is barely explored. A fanboy arises out of nowhere to join the band with no questions as to motive. Insulin shots for Hansel's diabetes as a plot device?
There is plenty wrong with the movie, however if you are looking to kill 90 minutes and want to see some wicked fights, go see it. Do not expect character development.

Visually, the movie was pretty entertaining. I wouldn't go out my way to see it again as there are other movies coming out in the approaching weeks. It reminded me of the movie "Van Helsing" from a few years back but not as cheesy. Two things the film makers could've worked on a little more to make the movie a little less lightweight: first, the fight scenes. The fight choreographers could've at least come up with a fighting style that although is based on martial arts, should make the fighters (especially the lead characters) look more like experienced brawlers than martial arts masters. Some fight scenes looked like something out of a chop-sockey, period kung-fu movie. Next, is dialog. The movie would've greatly benefited using dialog/speech appropriate to the time period and location, even if only sparsely used. As for the target audience, I say 17 yrs. and up. Gretel drops the "F" bomb in a early scene and there was one scene with some nudity. Oherwise a rocking good time!

Fun movie. Nothing else, think Van Helsing with more gore and cursing. Weak plot, Jeremy Renner was the only actor that I saw on the screen who was acting, and a very short film. Remember when seeing it, silly humor and close up action, hard to see whats going on, its an MTV movie after all.
