Hansel and Gretel: witch hunters that pack a punch...and a joke
Okay, I'm biassed. I like Renner. I think he has a screen presence that forces a movie to be fun. His performance here is not, let's say, The Town. But he dominates the movie, as does Fammke as the big bad witch. The movie has a B-movie feel with a big budget slap. The script is borderline good, using modern english in an old world backdrop, but it works here. The effects are better than good, but not quite great. The 3D is fun with bits of blood, arrows, and witch goo flying from the screen into your lap. And the movie is quite predictable. Okay, very predictable. But it added a little tension waiting for the inevitable and caused roars of laughter from the punch lines and fun witch explosions. This movie was a great escape from fiscal government headlines and gun hating rhetoric that dominates mainstream media - it came to theaters at a good time. I say go see it, bask in the violence and fantasy, watch hot chicks battle and witch gore flow.
