Indian-born director Gurinder Chadha was raised in Southall, England, where she began her career working for the BBC. She produced a documentary for Channel 4 in 1989 called I'm British But. . ., which explored the experiences of young British Asians, and by the next year the burgeoning director had launched her own production company, Umbi Films.
